Unsung Heroes
A tribute to Veterans
Everybody recognizes the people that landed during D-Day of World War 2. Everybody knows the people at Iwo-Jama. Everybody Knows General Paton! But when you ask then about The Tarawa Atolls they don’t know at all.
“Its Gotta be on the Map Son” was a file found by a intelligence officer while he went through Marine files. It was a poem written by one of a few surviving marines from the invasion of Tarawa Atolls. Say what now? You might think. The invasion of Tarawa was to be the first landing invasion by boat in World War 2 history. The Japanese were very well dug in and fought the marines for every square inch of land. There was no retreat for both sides. The reason was, the island was only one square mile. Great losses were made and friends died by their friends. Many young men perished. Yet back in the U.S.A, after the battle few people didn’t know what or where Tarawa was. Many marine survivors of the invasion weren’t recognized for there bravery until they were all died of age or other reasons.
The point is simple. Every day some act of courage is done but isn’t recognized. They fight for us and need support from us. Your job is to recognize these acts of courage and make the unsung heroes into General Paton figures.
