The Cats of Kinnacat of North Caroline

Part One: The Beginning

Imagine this. You are a colonist from England on your way to the new world. When the ship took off, it appeared to be filled with exactly one-hundred people. The thing was there were one-hundred twenty-one people on board. Now you have seen these stowaways and they have been eating kitchen scraps, jumping on people’s laps and tripping sailors as they ran about. These stowaways run on four feet, have pointed ears and at night meow at high pitches for kitchen scraps. You probably have an idea by now. The extra twenty-one visitors are cats. Yes, all cats. Some are just pretty darn cute. However, on the last leg of the journey supplies are running low. The cats eat everything and don’t provide anything for the ship. Thus the crew made a decision to throw the cats overboard.

The cats were all gathered in one huge net. The colonists were surprised to see that there were more than they expected. Most only saw three to four of the cats but none saw this many. Only the cook had seen more then four cats, he saw all twenty-one of them! (of course because he always fed them when the main rations had been served). A big hulking man held them grinning with satisfaction. This man’s name was Jim. He was known to torture the cats. One way was to pick one of them up while they were running by and bring them up to face him. Then he would say, “Bad old Pussycat”, making sure he spat along with the last word making the cat flinch. Other times he would pick them up and spank them like spoiled children. So there he was holding the bag jerking it up and down to annoy the cats. Once the entire crew came he said, “Let us get rid of these stowaways.” The crew cheered and watched as the man tossed the cats overboard. However luck was on the cat’s side and they landed on a sandbar while the net fell apart.  The cats trotted towards the area we know today as the Outer Banks. There the cats created there own society (these were no stupid cats) and government and named their own town Kinnacat.

When the colonist of Roanoke disappeared, the cats were having their 4th election for clan leader. The cats thrived for centuries. Then when the human developers came, the cats were cautious (because of their exploits with Jim) but soon loved their new friends. The area where the cats lived became a house development called Kinnakeet. However, if you say the area is Kinnakeet around one of the local cats they start hissing saying, “This area is not Kinnakeet, it was named by our forefathers as Kinnacat and it shall forever be named”

This is all true; don’t think its not!
