…My mothers’ odor is now a thunderous hammer beating on the back of my blood shot eyes. These days it feels like a normal reaction to everything, crying. I’m trying to be strong so my two younger brothers don’t lose their blind faith. Joel, the baby, is oblivious to the current situation. While Noah, the set child, is only mildly aware of what’s going on. My mother and I are the only two who understand. And no one is here to comfort us.
The roll of being the support pillar has been thrust upon me by my failure of a father. I’m 13 years old, and I’ve never had a class to teach me how to support a family. Just the other day I was degraded by a Nazi. He poured mud on me because he found me annoying. I was forced to hold back my tears, for the sake of my family.
Today is July 2, and it is the day my mother has decided she’s had enough. She has developed a plan for escape. We run over it with my next brother, while Joel sleeps silently. The plan is to create a big enough distraction so that all of the guards are drawn away from their jobs. Most of the people here are fairly irritable so I decide to throw a fairly large rock at a nearby wall for a loud noise that would aggravate everyone. It works! A small group begins shouting and the anger spreads like wildfire. Before we know it, the entire room of people is cantankerous. That’s when we make our move.
We are just at the gate, when Noah spots a frog. He runs over to examine it, and I try to whisper as loud as I can but he can’t hear me. As Noah gets closer to the frog he exclaims, “Look mommy!” That’s when the very thing I wished wouldn’t happen, did. Every guard turns around, and I guess Noah is a little too close to the fence because the next thing I hear is…BANG!! A gasp from in front of me and a cry from Joel, I hush him quickly though I can’t even hush myself. Noah lays motionless on the ground. My mother sprints quickly to him. The guards don’t take this too lightly because four seconds after my mother leaves my side I hear another…BANG!! My mother now lays motionless on the ground next to Noah. My first reaction is to cry, but then the guards would hear and see me and Joel. So I go on instinct and run with Joel in my arms. Somehow, I think he’s aware of what just happened and what we’re up against…
