To be or not to be, what is my purpose
To Be or Not To Be, What Is My Purpose ?
By : Nettie
Wind whips my hair and brushes it to the side of my confused facial complexion.
As I watch, young children skip across the road, not a hint of hesitation in their demeanor.
After I gaze, I hustle myself across the road shifting my gaze to other thoughts.
This question seems to be the reason nothing around me captured or lured my attention.
To be or not to be, what is my purpose?
Will it come in a vision?
And then I find myself somewhere I don’t think I belong.
My outlandish mind causes me to ponder.
I convince myself I am only dreaming.
Why do I worry?
Why should I resemble perfume?
That hasn’t a hint of fragrance.
Why should others tease?
Because they believe I don’t present potential.
Because the bones of my creative mind,
Are not of their kind.
They don’t structure a regular girl
Well I say, I am myself.
I say my Black skin is a feature,
That adds to the inquisitive, creative power,
I know I was blessed with.
If others don’t accept me, or find me as a person not like themselves.
I not only accept but adore me.
I find my talent its own reward,
I am like a doll that is first taken off the shelf.
To be or not to be that is the question.
To be a creative and fearless African American.
To not be a follower or a slave to another girl’s fame.
My talent leaves no question.
