Waking Beauty
waking beauty
as the sun slowly peeks around the corner of my window
i lift my head from the pillow, and turn towards it,
to see that the world is still asleep
i leave my warm nest of blankets
and run downstairs
I throw my coat on,
resisting the smell of the mouthwatering chocolate chip pancakes
my dad is cooking
I run out the door, determined to get the newspaper
but something stops me
all around me
the world is quiet
the noisy, fast-paced world I know is silent,
unmoving
the world is still asleep
as I look around
i take it all in
the crispness in the air that smells of life, living
the grass, frosted over and sparkling white in the sun
houses quiet and still, tones of peach and taffy slowly washing over them
the world is asleep
within me, I feel a sense of calm start to spread
peace flooding into me
it’s as if the world is a movie and I am the only one watching it
no one else around to spoil it
the world is still asleep
suddenly, time doesn’t matter
neither does the cold
for now, the newspaper can wait
along with the rest of the world
all that matters is this view, this moment in time
the world is still asleep
and as the world is waking
i find myself sitting down, watching
numbed by its beauty
